About me!

Rennie Young: I retired from Honda Canada Inc. last December after 26 years, 17 years with the military prior to that. Also, I turned 65 Sept. 10. "I wanted to do one thing in my life that would make a difference and I felt this was IT"! I surpassed my fund raising goal of $5,000. I want to thank all who donated to the cause on my behalf. I only started my fund raising on July 22 and found everyone very eager to contribute as just about everybody has been touched by Cancer. It is a horrific disease and we have to make it history!

GPS mounted on bike

I may not be the fastest rider and not the slowest.  I may not have the most expensive bike but I will have the most expensive bike computer on the ride:)  I borrowed the bike mounting hardware for the GPS but had to modify it to fit the larger diameter road handlebars.  Changed the data fields around to suit the riding and will load up all the US maps for the trip just to make sure nobody gets lost:)  Fund raising seems to have stalled around $3000 but should get more incoming next week and will do follow up emails.  Hurricane Bill is coming tomorrow but it seems to have veered off and now just heavy rain warning, except Cape Breton and NFLD which could get some damaging winds.

70K ride in the heat

No pic today, sorry! Left home about 1130 to do an hour's ride but into it wanted to do more so headed out through Bedford into Lwr. Sackville onto Cobiquid Rd up heartbreak hill then turned onto Windsor Junction and Fall River Rd climb to Waverley Rd. Went by my projected end point of Laurie Park and finally stopped at Enfield Irving out of water and no food since breaky:( Lucky I thought to bring some money or I would have looked pathetic panhandling for quarters at Big Stop to buy bannans and water:) On way back I passed another bike ride and their camper all signed out with only about 8 riders with jerseys "Awaress of Mental Illness Ride". The were from Toronto and left in May, must have been short ride days?? Seemed like a family thing, so I rode with them into Waverley, nice bunch! Really strong head wind coming back and first time I experienced drafting, really nice:) This was a good confidence builder for me as I felt really strong even climbing hill back up to home (Over 3 hours riding). So come October, I should be fine to do the daily trek:)

Hike instead of riding!

Temp was up around 34c today so decided to take a rest from riding and do a hike with friends and my best bud "Flag" We did about 4 kms in Wrandees a favorite MTB trail network with a couple of lake for dogs to swim. Put 25kms on road bike yesterday, had to take Van into Colonial Honda in Halifax as they are putting new engine in under warranty and had to do some preliminary work. So I drove in early in morning and biked home, really nice riding early! Then about 1530 biked back into city and picked up the Odyssey. My riding is coming alone fine and getting very used to the road thingy! Passed the 50% mark of my fundraising with lots of promises of future donations. Tim Outhit, Bedford Council, pledged a donation and will be asking other councillors to donate also, so make sure to ask local politians as they will support you in turn for your support at next election.

60 KM Group ride

First chance to meet some of the other riders who will be doing the Vancouver to Texas in Oct. What a great bunch of dedicated people. I can't wait to get to know them better and find out more about why they are doing this? We did the Sambro loop, a lot of climbing going out and not too bad coming back in through Spryfield. My neighbor and friend, Randi Flinn came with me and did awesome! We tried to talk her into taking $5K out of their bank account and joining us but she has too many family commitments, although she would love to do it!

So, I bought a road bike!

So, I bought a road bike, had one about 10 years ago and didn't like the "Roady thingy":) They told me I could not bring my mountain bike because it could not keep the pace. After my first couple of rides I found out they were right:) So after dialing in all the adjustment I headed out to Laurie Park which I thought was about 60KM return. Good ride, bike works well and I worked harder than expected for a seasoned mountain biker:) When I arrived back in Bedford my GPS told me I only covered just over 40KM. So I will have to do some riding prior to Oct. 12:) I want to do at least two 160's by end of September. Will keep you posted!
